Encore is now the primary CLAMS Catalog

The Encore catalog was launched in 2016 and, starting on March 6th, will become the primary search method for CLAMS.

What is Encore?
Encore is a new way to search for books, DVDs, digital titles, etc. in CLAMS libraries. Encore is particularly powerful when you begin with a broad search and want to narrow it down. The tools in Encore provide multiple ways to refine a given search and include features common to search engines such as Google, commercial web sites, and social networking sites.

Encore integrates the patron’s OverDrive eBook checkouts and holds into “My Account” and allows access to articles from Gale General OneFile, an online reference resource provided through the state.

The “Classic” catalog is still available as an optional catalog search.

  1. i do not like the new service! why not allow a preview on such updates and get a response before mucking up a service. this really was a very bad idea…!

    • Encore has been available as an option to preview since August 20, 2016. The changes made on Monday make Encore the primary search rather than the option to “try Encore” that was previously displayed. The Classic Catalog is still available for use for those who prefer the traditional catalog. Encore was launched last year in response to a patron and staff survey where users wanted a more ‘Google-like” search experience. Most libraries now offer this type of search, known as a Discovery catalog.

This new system seems very user unfriendly. It does not remember my Clams Card Number (which I have not memorized) or fill in my password. When I look up a book it does not differentiate between Author or title. It seems much harder to get to my account, see whether any books that I have ordered are in transit, to look at or modify my book list. I would like to get back to the Classic catalogue but have not figured yet how.

    • You still do not need to remember your barcode. All login pages ask for username or barcode. Encore does not block the option of saving your login information on your computer. There are facets/refinements on the side of the screen that you can choose, author or title, among many other facets. When logged in click on your name you’ll see your checkouts, holds, preferred searches, etc. For more information please see http://library.clamsnet.org/screens/EncoreFAQs.html.

Where’s my account information? I don’t necessarily want to start with a Search every time I log on. Don’t like Encore–sorry.

  4. Initial impression is not good. Not getting good results. Lots of internet errors (404 etc). Have to go to classic catalog to find what I need. Why change something that isn’t broken and gives good information?

  5. I don’t like the Encore search engine. I have entered a search for a book by title, and was rewarded with the titles of 2 books that have absolutely no relationship to the book I wanted.
It is helpful to know that the Classic search is an option. It would be even more helpful if you would post instructions about how to find and connect with it!
