  1. I need my library every week, for learning, for entertainment, for feeling rooted in my community. I borrow books, movies, e-books, and come in to surf the web. The library is essential for me to stay connected to the world.

I LOVE my library. I’m there at least once a week to collect books or movies. I have a kindle that I download to. I’m an artist and always check the library selection to see if they have the books I need to create a project. Everytime I come in I check the sales books to see if there’s anything I like. Everyone at Brooks is pleasant andvery helpful. Thank you for being there!

The Nantucket Atheneum is the most wonderful, beautiful institution on the island. I can never spend enough time there. It is a regal building, a warm and welcoming environment that enriches the mind and the soul. While an island library may fool you into thinking its resources might be limited, it is anything but. My favorite place to lose hours is the Nantucket section, where there are so many interesting treasures to delve into. However, the CLAMS Network allows islanders to access all categories of books, DVDs, CDs, digital downloads and other digital media, and likely as many choices of anything that would be available to a city library. I’m never disappointed with my desired acquisition of materials at the Atheneum. There is also a terrific online database for the research I do in my work. In addition, our Library staff is wonderfully friendly and incredibly knowledgeable, above all they the Library’s best assets. Finally, the lectures and seminars they offer year-round cover all subjects of interest. Even their fundraising efforts surpass most, and are made to appeal to all islanders, not just the very wealthy. I don’t know what Nantucket would do if the Atheneum’s existence was ever threatened. It is an island gem.

  5. Without our local library my family would be starved for the resources that are offered. Not only would we not be able to read current books and periodicals but our cultural needs are filled in many different ways.
The afterschool programs, museum passes, special concerts/lectures/film that are available, engage in many ways. Our library provides a place for all to go and be part of community, to interact, learn, create and share. It’s value is a treasured resource that can’t be counted monetarily. It’s an institution to be respected and enjoyed. A living, breathing place of knowledge, entertainment, education and the arts. We are very blessed with a skilled, intelligent staff where we live, who feel like family to many and exude warmth and acceptance to all, in an ever more fragmented world. Our libraries are just about all we have left in a civil society. A last bastion of fair and equal, (and unfettered) access to lifelong learning in the garden(s) of humanity. Let it grow.

  6. I love my local library, it combines so many services I regularly use and depend upon. I visit every week, often multiple times. Because I cannot afford to buy any books, videos, or research materials the library has been an extremely valuable connection to the world for me.

I believe reading is one of the most valuable life skills anyone in the world can posses; without written communication our world would still be living in the Dark Ages. It is the gift of knowledge and sharing in our world.

The ability to read and my lifelong relationship with libraries has enabled me to become more educated and knowledgeable that I ever would had otherwise been able. it is through my access to reading materials that has broadened my knowledge of the world in many, many aspects, and has also taught me extremely useful writing skills.

Yet this is not all libraries are; they are places for pleasure and community involvement. Libraries are a central part of every community’s being. The benefit public libraries provide to the entire population is invaluable, and for the money spent on library resources a fantastically good bargain.

And, to be a little humorous, I really, really appreciate the spell-check function on the computers!

I hope these comments will be helpful in providing an understanding of how much our communities value our public libraries and that it will persuade our government to continue to support these institutions strongly.

Thank you for the opportunity to share my opinion,

    Diane E Caliri
